I dont think there has ever been such a divisive player on the Houston Oilers and/or the Tennessee Titans. For that alone, we need to move away from him.
Once again listening to local radio interviewing a national NFL analysts...
"what about Mariota in Tennessee"
"people are trashing Dianne(sp) for saying there was a competition, yes the players and coaches are saying in public there is no competition, but behind closed doors there is a different narrative. She has sources and those sources are telling her there is a competition. If you are looking for a franchise qb, Mariota is not it."
to sum it up
So to sum up...you think if a group of fans don't like a player, they should get rid of the player because of that?
Put another way, a minority group of fans of a high school football team don't like a certain player - let's say your son. You think they should kick that player off the team for that?
Can you imagine a GM explaining to the owner...we got rid of this player because a certain group of fans don't like him? Not only would the GM be fired, but they'd never be a GM again. Divisive players? You think NE cared about signing Moss after his off-field stuff. Did AP get another chance after abusing his own kid? Read that book about all the felons in the NFL. They aren't into the popularity game, they are in the winning business (popularity comes after winning). Sure we don't want thugs and those types on this team, but Mariota's intangibles are great and everyone agrees on that. They aren't gonna dump him because people are disappointed in him. They have given him all the pieces this year. He'll do it or he won't (to their satisfaction, not ours).
Lastly, the QB competition doesn't make sense for a number of reasons. First is, Tannehill almost never plays with the 1's and if you had a real compeition (disregarding what people were saying), the actions speak louder than words. From what I've read, outside of a 2min drill, Mariota has done everything with the 1's. Also, you'd have more equal playing time with the 1's in pre-season games. Tannehill doesn't really play with the ones in pre-season so far so that doesn't make sense. Their actions are that Mariota is the starter and Tannehill is the #2. The Titans aren't about being sneaky in these types of things. Vrabel is pretty clear about stuff...even when giving coach speak.
I don't think there is a qb competition per se, but I think Tannehill is here to be a starter level backup so if Mariota gets hurt again, we don't miss out on a playoff spot because we have Gabbert starting a couple of games. That's a this season thing.
The future is that Mariota will or won't earn an extension. If he doesn't, they get to try Tannehill out in our system and see what he'd be like so we can see what we have with him. So if Mariota isn't the answer, we see if Tannehill is or can be a bridge vet.
I think the Titans think they have a win now team and they want to make sure we have high quality depth everywhere so we can take some injuries and not derail the season.
