"Among 26 qualifying NFL quarterbacks, Mariota has averaged the 4th longest time in the pocket per drop back at 2.90 seconds. He’s spent at least 2.5 seconds — roughly the NFL average time to attempt — in the pocket on 61.9% of his drop backs this season, the 3rd highest rate in the league. Out of his 22 sacks, 17 of them have come more than 2.5 seconds after the snap.

Mariota has been under pressure on 36.0% of his drop backs which ranks as the 15th highest pressure rate in the league among those same 26 passers. The problem is that no quarterback allows pressure to be converted to sacks at a higher rate than Mariota. He allows 34.4% of his pressures to turn into sacks. The next highest rate in the league is rookie Kyler Murray at 30.0%. The median rate among the 26 qualifying quarterbacks we are looking at here is 16.2%, less than half of Mariota’s rate. This isn’t limited to just 2019 either unfortunately. Mariota also led the league in this category in 2018 with 29.8% of his pressures turning into sacks."

Nothing about that suggests that we have a bottom 5 offensive line. They could and should play better, but the sack total, cherry picked plays, and irrational, uneducated fan reactions are the only thing which suggest that they deserve the image which is being portrayed. As this data suggests, if Mariota avoided pressure as well as the middle of the pack QB in the league does, he'd have 10 sacks right now and the line issues would be closer to an afterthought than the offense killer you guys want to think they are.

This thread is about the season in general, don't turn this into a MM8 thread, there's a different thread for it.

Apologies, I found the article about our O-line and couldnt find a better thread to place it in
All good, I was more referring to the he/she poster ABC person because the only thing the person ever does is cry, moan, whine about MM8 in every thread and never talks about anything else.

Also your post about the O Line fits here as it is generally a talking point about the team per se.

Vrabel was hired to maximize the talent on this roster and get us over the 9-7 mark. Good to great is what we heard all off season. The team has regressed at least offensively which is hindering this team from taking it to the next level. Week 6 and the team is underperforming. Vrabel needs to stop with this “giving the player confidence” bs. At some point if players continue to regress then it becomes a liability. Liability then turns into accountability. AJ on PR,Santos, Saffold, etc. Accountability starts at the top. Am I saying fire Vrabel? No. But he needs to do something besides going back to fundamentals because even that’s not working.
Vrable isn't a proven coach. He is just there for his name and not ability. Fire him now

It wouldnt get any worse either. Keith Carter had 0 exp as a OL coach when he got the job. I'm tired of these good ole boy hires for positional coach positions.
This is the truth...the coaches don't have any skills to teach. There are just stupid hires getting paid to stand there. The players know this

Yeah, I'm not impressed so far. His decision making has cost the team a few wins and why can't he get the players fired up and motivated to destroy teams at home.

The worst part is you can't even talk football with your friends because your team sucks so bad there is nothing to say.

Cuz our only options are Mary and fitz eh

dumb logic

Yeah, because that's entirely what I was saying.... jesus, quit poking your head into discussions which you don't have the mental capacity to isolate...

Most of this fanbase are like domestic abuse victims.

Cant get rid of Mary! The next guy could be even worse! We should extend him.

Three seasons of 9-7 is awesome! Sure beats those 2-13 days!

If glue sniffers like 520 had their hand in the draft pick selection jar, the next guy WOULD be even worse....

Roger Saffold.

Was thinking more like a tackling dummy. You can run over them. You have 2 atlest go around the pole for a turnstyle.

Nobody cares about posts like this when they can just blame Mariota and call it a night.

Nobody is disputing that there are other issues. But you guys have been blaming the crap offense on head coaches (been through 3 in marys tenure) OCs (been though at least 4) weapons (been through a bunch) and line (been through a bunch).

At a certain point, you gotta look at the constant.

If Mary can only thrive in ideal conditions, he won't hack it in the NFL. Ideal conditions do not exist.

This is EXACTLY what I've been saying for awhile now. There is a (ever decreasing in size) segment of our fanbase who will point the finger at any and every thing to avoid admitting Mariota just doesn't have it. If it's not the playcalling, it's the receivers. If it's not the receivers, it's the OL. If it's not the OL, it's that he doesn't have a run game. If it's not the run game, it's that he isn't fully healthy. And on and on and on.

It's not even that the "excuses" aren't legitimate. Many of them are. But FFS, at a certain point you just have to say, excuses or not, the guy simply hasn't proven himself as the answer for this team. ESPECIALLY, when we're faced with a decision on potentially giving him anywhere in the neighborhood of a $100m contract. Do we really want to tie our franchise/potential success to this guy for another 5 years? What do we lose, really, by letting him walk?

As you said, ideal conditions do not exist in this league (or at the very least they are extremely rare). If your guy needs everything around him to be perfect to be successful, I mean, what good is he really? Any halfway decent QB should be able to be successful with a top OL, top run game, top WR group, top defense, etc. That's not what makes a franchise QB. A legit franchise QB should be a guy who can play well DESPITE not having all of those things all of the time.

Seattle is allowing pressure at a higher rate than we are. Russell Wilson is on pace for 4,500 yards, 38 TDs, 0 INTs, he's taken 9 fewer sacks, and most importantly, they are winning.
