He's going to have offers. QBs always have a market.

Sure QB’s always get offers but it doesn’t mean they are big offers or even starting QB offers. Teddy Bridgewater is a prime example.

The NFL is different now. Most teams either have a vet QB or have drafted a QB they are going to ride with for a few years.

The only legitimate teams right now that you could argue would be in the market for Marcus would be Dolphins, Bengals, Colts, & Bucs. 3 of those teams will most likely be picking in a spot where they can get a rookie in this loaded draft class. Even the colts may be able to grab a rookie there are so many of them this year.

I said nothing about the annual value of his contract. I’m talking about signing him to a 5-7 year deal.

What is your purpose for only signing him to a 5 year deal except to give us cap problems faster?

Most qb deals don’t allow you to get out for 3 years without taking a massive hit so the only thing that will be different is you’ll blowup our cap in year four and then you’ll be at the same place as you’ll be at the end of this season except Mariota will have all the leverage.

Put him on a 10 year deal and you can keep his cap manageable for longer. And if he doesn’t play well...you can get out about the same time so I see no upside to a shorter deal unless you think you can get him for a cheaper annual value.

You keep saying how many other teams will want him? Clearly there will be teams in need of a qb. But what’s your answer to the flip side? Suppose you try to low ball him or annoy him Orr someone makes him a better offer and he leaves and we’re picking at 25 in round 1. Who’s gonna be our starting qb in 2020?

NFL contracts are all about the guaranteed money. A short term deal with low guarantees.

That’s my entire point. I don’t think we are going to have many other teams bidding against us. We aren’t low balling him. We just aren’t offering a long term deal. Not many other places he can go unless some people retire. Loaded QB class coming out and teams are going to want a cheap rookie deal to help rebuild over paying a QB tons of money.

If he leaves we can sign Tannehill to be our starter.

Mariota had a good game. But he did not stretch the field at all. He had one deep throw to Brown, and only gained 75 yards of air yards. That means his passes only totaled 75 yards past the line of scrimmage before being caught.

Marcus ranked 19 out of 27 passers for air yards per completion, and 21 out of 27 for air yards per attempt. Basically he was throwing shorter passes than nearly any other QB in the league.

Now, that's not necessarily a horrible thing for this game. He protected the football and didn't have any turnovers in a game that could have completely flipped with a bad turnover. But throwing a lot of short passes is not going to get it done against some of the better QB's we face this year, especially if our D has a sub par game.

EDIT: To add to this though, for 2018 he ranked 25 of 33 qualifiers for air yards per completion and 22 of 33 for average depth of target. Basically, he was in the bottom third of the league for throwing the ball down the field. Context to that is that he was injured and couldn't feel his fingers, but it's concerning that his first game this year he's doing the exact same things.

Offense was tailored more towards what he can do tho. Especially in the red zone. Which is a good thing overall. He’s a bottom tier QB for the most part, not many things are going to change.

You see Denver last night? Flacco looked bad so Denver may be a landing spot. There are teams with aging vets; Steelers, saints, chargers, Patriots, and teams like ours that might not be sold with their guy. Teams like Bears, jags, colts, bucs etc. He has shown glimpses and abilities to win NFL games and it's known in the league no favors were done here in TN to help him grow with all the coaching changes. There will be teams if he isn't signing here.

Mariota didn't look better than Flacco.

You keep asking about specifics going into the next offseason and there really just isn’t any way of knowing all that yet. It hasn’t played itself out yet. But even average QB’s get contracts. We know that. Look at Foles and Flacco. If Mariota plays well, there will be suitors. Why are we debating this?

Picture me sipping some MacCallan's 21 scotch and playing some sorrow violin song for you.

We know you're mad and so bent MM8 played good and we won. It's just eating at you he didn't have any picks or fumble. Your man-crush Cossell has nothing to say and your idol Tanne only registered negative yards on the stat sheet! LOL

If only he had played good... He looked like rolled over dog poop most of the game. With a few good throws over the course of the game.

''He was composed,'' Vrabel said of Mariota. ''He got us into all the right plays. They were pressuring, and some of those things weren't easy. It wasn't perfect. He will tell you he missed some throws, but he competed.''

that basically sums it up, nothing positive to say so "well we told him what play to run and he told them in the huddle" great work Mariota.

Chit happens. He settled down and made the plays to help us win. We won. On to next game. Fu-q the Colts

Mariota was fine. Flacco was fine. It's just that our team was so dominant that fine resulted in a 30 point win and Denver was so mediocre that fine resulted in a loss

Fine, I can accept that take. Maybe this is a more acceptable way for you to state an opinion. Your tone gets rather absurd when it seems like 99% of what you post is to always marginalize what the QB did or didn't do in a negative spin. There's other elements to the game and other players but your focus is to try and hate on MM8 constantly. Why not talk about another player that looked bad or not playing well like Adoree or Ben Jones etc.

100% on the dot. But the difference is that Art shows promise of working to Marcus' strengths, which makes him look better than he has the last couple years, where the Broncos just have Flacco out there.

It’s a loaded rookie QB class. Denver will go get their guy because they will likely have a top pick.

For the last time a team with an aging vet is going to sign Marcus to a big contract to backup their aging vet. Unless you think 5 qbs all retire at the same time it ain’t gonna happen. Steelers drafted their Big Ben replacement already. No reason at all to believe Rivers, Brady, or Brees will retire at this point. All still playing at a high level and on contending teams.

The just can’t just magically get out of the Nick Foles contract after this year. They are projected to be 19 million over the cap for 2020.

The bears and all the gave up to move up for Trubisky are going to ditch a rookie contract to sign Marcus to a long term deal?? Really?

Colts are realistic.

Bucs will likely be picking top 10 if Winston duds out and they’ll pick their rookie.

Was Bridgewater not an average QB? Did Flacco get a long term deal?

I didn't watch every single play , but I'm not sure that there is to complain about. The defense was dominant, and given a team down to a backup tackle and #3 RG against one of the most talented fronts, they did their job.

Fangio looks like a dud thus far. Our defense played well and protected the lead so that Cleveland eventually wore down and couldn't stop anything . Flacco can win games like that. But if the defense can't even touch Derek Carr or slow down one of the least talented receiving groups in the league and more is put on Flacco's plate, it will be a long year

It’s a loaded rookie QB class.
Not sure where this "loaded qb class" talk keeps coming from. I guess just cuz tua? There is really no one else unless you are a Fromm believer. Scouts have not been talking up this qb class as anything special in comparison to recent years.
