1. He had already crossed the line of scrimmage, throwing it was not an option
2. Trying to evade would have been riskier as his leg's would be more vulnerable
The guy evaded 2 all pros and threw a safety to the ground against Jacksonville without taking a hit. You're telling me that he couldn't have evaded some JAG in the preseason?

Y'all out here acting like Mariota's scrambling has been what's been getting him hurt....... Look at Mariota's injuries:

Dec 22, 2018 NFL Cervical Neck Stinger Mariota missed the season finale.

Nov 18, 2018 NFL Cervical Neck Stinger - missed 1 half. Easy to shut him down for a half when you're already getting blown out of the water.

Sep 9, 2018 NFL Arm Elbow Sprain--- Once again, another illegal hit by a Dolphin..

Oct 1, 2017 NFL Thigh Hamstring Sprain/Pull Unspecified Grade - Can be attributed to the burn it took to get around Clowney, and the awkward land on his side - still only missed 1 game.

Dec 24, 2016 NFL Leg Fibula Fracture In Week 16,--- as a Result of NOT SCRAMBLING in time/ Freak fall by a DL

Dec 20, 2015 NFL Knee MCL Sprain Grade 2 Mariota sprained his right MCL - was shutdown for the season. (2-14 year)

Oct 18, 2015 NFL Knee MCL Sprain Grade 2 ---- As a Result of an illegal hit by Olivier Vernon

So in total, that's 7 injuries of NFL count.... 4 of them being as a result of something out of his control. 2 for being shutdown to prevent career changing injury, and 1 from a scramble.....

It's never been about TAKING HITS ON SCRAMBLING.... so just stop.

(Marcus Mariota injury history and analysis)

You're seriously defending that? They've been telling him all summer not to take those hits. It's as if he doesn't want the extension.
As stated before, damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.

Full game time speed makes for judgements like taking a hit or not almost impossible.
He wants to win, he’s going to take SOME hits. He can’t live in a bubble either.
The best way for him to avoid hits, is just improve on getting rid of the ball faster. Every QB gets hit, he may take a few more because he can scramble. That’s the risk worth his scrambling ability as the reward.

Based on your take, he never should have had the game sealing block, the stiff arm, or some of the other plays that actually give fans that glimmer of hope he may be a “franchise QB” (I hate that term).

It's concerning that he's proceeding things so slowly in year 5. The game should have slowed down enough for him that he can make a sound judgement call in a preseason game. Patrick Mahomes had no issue sliding.

Absolutely ridiculous people are still hung up on a play that happened in a preseason gm. He dove and got flipped, scored, and didn’t get hurt. Who the hell cares. Vrabel already came out and said he didn’t have a problem with it so why all the shade? Let me guess because he shouldn’t be taking those hits? Apparently he’s not changing his style. People getting so triggered by his play that they have to keep repeating the same thing over and over. Sad as hell.

Listen to Vrabel's post season press conference. He was absolutely frustrated with his inability to stay healthy. Robinson publicly stated his desire for him not to take big hits, as that was going to be a big deciding factor as to whether or not he was going to be the franchise QB. Do you honestly think they are okay with this? It's much more likely that they have moved on mentally and are perfectly comfortable with Tannehill playing. There is no way KC is okay with Mahomes doing this in the preseason. They have even forbidden him to play basketball. Mariota's value has declined significantly to them.

Why would I go back and listen to a post season press conference when I can just listen to the post game presser of the game regarding the play you are obsessed with? Vrabel said he was fine with it so that’s it. I know that kills you but you are trying like hell to make this bigger than what it is.

I know exactly what it is. And you will soon enough.

How did Mariota struggle? He was 6-9 for a touchdown. And there was a major drop or he would have been 7-9. How did he run into a wall? Tannehill has been fine and so has Mariota. Stop caring so much about being right about Mariota on this board and just pull for your team to succeed.
Because guys are having to fall to the ground and make one handed catches on routine passes. That does not translate into an efficient passing game. Compare that to Tannehill's throws, which hit the receivers in stride. That's why he'll be our starting QB in time.

Funny, you keep on going.. And going.... and going....

NFL Team's Starting QB Job Is Surprisingly "Wide Open"

Mariota has reportedly done little to assert himself in camp this summer and is quickly losing ground to former Dolphins starter Ryan Tannehill… Volin also cited a recent ESPN report that suggested Mariota is “no lock” to start while noting that some of the team’s coaches prefer Tannehill. Even if Mariota is able to hold off Tannehill for the starting job, Volin said he figures to be on a “short leash…”

I’m less concerned with the end zone dive , that’s just a part of his dna as I am the “deer in headlights” indecisiveness and weak passes . I keep envisioning the 2016 Mariota with the confidence and quick release along with the deep shots and pin point accuracy on intermediate. Hopefully he can bring that back but the body language at the beginning of that last game though pre season , didn’t feel right. I’m gonna withhold my opinion till regular season but I’m a little concerned , hopefully it’s unnecessarily. It will provide for more entertainment though as a fan . Sometimes when that pressure comes up the middle I wish he’d just sprint to the side , I know it’s easy for me to say watching on TV but actually think he should be more aggressive as a runner just make sure he slides and he’s good at that. His willingness to please and try and prove he’s a pocket passer hurts him a bit . If he would take off shamelessly a bit more he’d take pressure off himself. Motto is stick to your strengths.

Wow, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe?

Thanks for the inside scoop, Batman!

Well if you want to give him credit for a drop, you probably should take one away for the one handed (way high) catch Lewis (or was it McNichols) caught.

While he was not perfect, he was good enough that if that was the Mariota we saw night in and night out, I would be a Mariota fan.

It’s not genuine concern that these complaints stem from. They drank the cool aid from no name sportswriter that tannehill May start and were trying to find a silver lining where Marion’s shined. No coach could be genuinely mad at a qb giving his all and using his rare athleticism to score points. Yes it was preseason, but Marion’s plays hard. Period. Everyone on that sideline was thinking- That’s my quarterback!!

It's only nothing because he wasn't hurt. You can bet your ass Vrabel wasn't happy with him taking that hit and told him so in private.

HE... HAS... BEEN ... INJURED... 1 TIME.... FROM SCRAMBLING.....
Have yourself some Milk of Magnesia and chill...

I think I'll trust Mariota jetting up field more than I will him standing back in '18 waiting for JUNK to get open.....

That's why he throws picks like a rookie still.

I think that his pocket presence and accuracy are still huge issues which affect every single one of the 10 players around him. Our receivers are constantly having to fall to the ground and make awkward adjustments to routine throws. And that's all that he's making- routine throws that any QB in the league should be able to handle . Watch Tannehill making the same throws. It looks effortless.

Mariota is killing any YAC potential and making the catch unnecessarily difficult. I'm sure that Robinson and the coaches are frustrated that Corey Davis supposedly looks like this super star in practice, yet Mariota cannot deliver an accurate ball to him and makes him frankly look very average. While Firkser is looking like a stud with Tannehill and his guys are taking his passes and diving at the pylon.

Oh I agree completely about YAC. Mariota is awful at ball placement. One of the worst I have ever seen. Even during the drive the other night, the only time he hit a receiver in stride was the TD pass and that was set up for him to just throw straight at the goalpost and the receiver run towards the goalpost. The other 2 big plays he made, he caused the receivers to stop their stride to catch the ball, hence no YAC.

Even still, if he is completing 15 and 20 yard passes with no YAC, that still moves us right down the field.

He was 30th in air yards per attempt last year. So I get what you're saying, but it doesn't do so very quickly or very well. We had a couple of drives stall because of awkward throws that the receiver couldn't haul in.

With Tannehill playing , one guy took a short pass to the end zone and nearly did the same because they didn't have to slow their momentum at all to make the catch. So ball placement can make a substantial difference and present opportunities for big plays.

We'll be facing a lot of QBs this year who will be delivering much more accurate balls, so like AT&T says, just okay isn't okay. We need to get everything we can out of the offense
