If MM is shy on throwing deep (maybe he doesn’t trust who’s deep) or maybe it’s a confidence thing as if he throws pick he’ll get benched. If that’s the case and him in a contract year, I see him not wanting to make mistakes or make that throw Incase it ends up as a bad stat against him def now that he has a replacement that could easily take his job. I guess I’m saying if he has t thrown deep much in 4years I def don’t expect him to do it in a contract year knowing everything he does/doesn’t will be counted against him

Mariota throws when asked. It's usually 3rd and long and he was the best at converting those last season.

But some people only look at touchdowns and yards.

I would say in leadership and intangibles - yes. In production, not yet. He's got this year to figure it out. And there are several players in the same boat fighting for a new contract or contract extension.

When we drafted him we knew there would be a learning curve. We made that incredibly more difficult by changes coaches and systems every year. Some of the talent around him has been a problem. Some of the problems have been Mariota as well.

Point is...he has a lot MORE talent around him now and he's in the same system for the first time. If he can come back healthy (along with everyone else) and if everyone brings their A-game, we SHOULD have the offense that we want this year.

If Mariota doesn't get it done this year, we'll be on to the next guy. If he does, settle in and enjoy the ride!
“In reality, you only have to look at the player and his production.” - Gut

Don’t you guys ever get sick of excuses though? Honestly? He got matched by Josh Rosen...on a bum azz squad....FOH. It’s not just about TD’s. It’s 24/23 the past 2 years....it’s the decline. He’s basically had 1 good year...It’s Not like we are dominating. 8-8/9-7 is average, and even then, it wasn’t all him. Thank our defense. As for Dion Lewis, yeah, he sucked. But he was damn good the previous year in NE. We are 1 dimensional for a reason, and to act like that is all on our wideouts is ridiculous.

Don’t you get tired of Hating?

The complaints about the supporting cast go out the window when you consider that despite having a terrible offensive line, no running game, and a bunch of castoff WRs, and nearly topping the league in QB hits, Mariota had a career high in YPG and yards per attempt in his rookie season, as well as a 2/1 TD/INT ratio. He's been gun shy since '17 . There's no other reasonable explanation as to why he was so much worse than he was during his first two years in the league.

How many OCs and HCs has he had?

Are we going around the wheel of excuses now? We made a change in 16, and he actually improved. Then he got worse, with no change to the coaching staff at all. He was so bad, in fact, that we HAD to get a new HC and OC in order to fix him. It's not like it was done intentionally to stunt his development.

Even LeFleur was like “I don’t know what the F to do here...F it, i’m Going to head coach a proven entity” lol

Everyone knows:
Rogers>Mariota
Well yeah, no duh...but he hung around 1 year and was supposed to be great. Literally, Mularkey did better. So much for opening things up. I don’t want to hear squat about Walker being down either, because he barely beat those numbers with him the previous year.

Round and round.....broken record

It doesn’t take 5 years to build chemistry. No doubt he has had some changes etc, but he also had a healthy team 2 years ago and couldn’t push the ball downfield more than 13 TD’s. Can’t always point the finger at everyone else. He’s the captain and they pay him to bring out the best on offense. He has had plenty of help sent his way. I’m over those excuses.
Which players does Mariota have 5 (4 really) years with?
Lewan?
Not a Mariota apologist by any means, but I think he’s got mostly an offense with 2-3 years with and even that is scattered.

Um...so if this season, Mariota produces 22 TD's and 8 INT's and 3800yards...you'd happily sign him as you'd happily sign Dak?
I’ve said it a hundred times, if Marcus does it 2 years straight franchise deal. Otherwise no.

His insecurities as a QB. He's had that chemistry for 2 years.

Sounds about right. I mean we weren’t running jumbo sets etc, but we didn’t open up jack squat with LeFleur like we were supposed to. We ran Dion Lewis between the tackles and small balled as always.

That's because that offense puts up passing numbers but it's based off of the running game. We couldn't run because of our OL mainly...putting ourselves behind the chains and into 3rd and long.

Mariota already got hurt in game one...you think with our shoddy protection you want to open it up with Gabbert and risk him getting hurt too?

Overall, when we have a good running game and these weapons at receiver (and TE), we should be able to do a lot of damage in the passing game.
