520 has been a hater since before we even drafted him. He cherry picks stats or makes stuff up to bash him. A lot of people follow/echo those sentiments and constantly pointing out mistruths is time consuming and since it goes around and around...not worth my time.

There is a difference between being a hater who bashes him no matter what and someone who is disappointed with where he’s at or has lost hope of him being our franchise qb long term.

I have not been a part of the gabbert Mariota debate but I don’t understand it beyond the avg misguided nfl fan who always longs for the backup qb until they actually get him. 10mins later they want the starter back. Was anyone watching our last game thinking yes...we have Gabbert over Mariota so we’re going to the playoffs? If that was you...please stand up and be counted.

Or someone give me the short version of how they think Gabbert is as good as Mariota? Or better?

The fact is that the difference between top tier qb’s and backups comes down to a few factors and usually the most important factors are ceiling and consistency. Mariota has the ceiling but not the consistency yet. If he doesn’t find it soon he won’t get too many chances in the league.

Gabbert doesn’t have the ceiling nor the consistency to be a starter and his lack of consistency even for a backup won’t let him stay in the league too long unless he improves.

We will know soon enough whether we’ll have Mariota long term, Tanny long term, Tanny as a bridge and mortgaging the house to draft another ‘franchise’ prospect.

Let’s hope we have the roster to make the playoffs and give us a chance at something big this year. By the end of the season (or earlier) we’ll KNOW what’s up.

This is a very fair summary of the state of affairs I think.

I would love to see Marcus come out and ball out next year. I think he should be supported by a very good run game, and TT and CD, in their third years should make strides, along with DW and Hump. I expect we will see better than last year from him.

I do wish we could figure out how to get marucs going early in games. He certainly has the killer instinct in the 4th quarter. But he often seems helpless or lethargic in the first half.

I want to see him come out and put points up early. Give the D and run game a chance to play holding a lead, rather than playing catch up.

Next year will be interesting. I'm sure there will be moments when I think we're contenders, and others where I hate myself for believing again. Just like the last couple years.

The facts are that Mariota has shown flashes of top tier qb play...but he’s also played poorly at times. Too many times. He’s also been banged up and hurt quite a bit. Blame the coaches...the scheme...the OL...the inconsistent run game...the lack of weapons...Mariota arm strength...lack of pocket awareness...blah blah blah. Many of these things have elements of truth and some have been blown way out of proportion...both for and against Mariota.

None of it really matters. Mariota is on his final year and we have a viable starter backing him up. He will either put it all together and earn a long term contract or he won’t.

But I must say I’m very disappointed in many posters here who know better by knowing more about football than the avg fan and yet have followed this wave of hate instead of truth. Truth doesn’t mean Mariota is the best qb since sliced bread...or that I want him to be our long term qb no matter what. If he wants a long term contract he needs to earn it.

But even worse...these haters bash people like me BECAUSE I don’t jump on the hate bandwagon!

And it’s rather disconcerting that we’ve had one of our most exciting free agency periods and all some people can talk about is bashing Mariota.

That’s sad for this board and the many great Titans fans here.

Nice post! I think the OL improvement and Henry inning like he did in December’s and getting Walker back will be huge factors. Humphries should also play a huge role on 3rd down.

The thing most people didn’t understand about our offense is that it’s based on a strong run game. When your OL has problems and leads to an inconsistent run game...it puts a lot of pressure on the qb. A strong and consistent run game will give us a better passing game and allow MM to get going early.

If you consider we had the 3rd best scoring defense...imagine how good it can be if we have a consistent top 10 offense.

I’ve said numerous times on here I want him to succeed...I’ve also said he needed more competition behind him. I was behind him without criticism for years before I started, and trust me, it’s warranted. It’s ridiculous that he can’t be criticized while being constantly injured and putting up subpar numbers. The real haters here are the Mariota loves that can’t take the warranted and deserved criticism...Cjthebeast hanging his head on the bar crying that his boy is running out of excuses and actually has competition and on the hot seat. That’s reality.

The haters keep repeating the same things...

Say non-haters claim he can’t be criticized.

Bash the poster - usually by making stuff up.

Claim opinions are facts.

Who says you can’t criticize Mariota? NO ONE!!!

Making stuff up about other posters is not how you win a debate and throws your credability out the window.

Why would you think you blindly supporting him at the beginning without any criticism is a good idea where you seem to be on the opposite side of things now?

There is plenty to criticize about Mariota and they’re certainly valid concerns that should be brought up and discussed. But there is also plenty of haters who think he can do nothing right...bash him for things he doesn’t deserve to be bashed for...make up stuff and call him silly names like they are 2yr olds.

And frankly...do you root for us to win despite your disdain for our starting qb???

Wait a minute....are you CJ’s mom? Thanks for the pep talk. Yes I do root for us always, and I’ll get behind Marcus as always. It’s not a debate, it’s facts and reality.

Cj's mom? LOL!!! He better hope not!

Glad you're still on board!

And always happy to discuss/debate facts and reality. And the reality is, this was a great trade and signing of Tannehill!!! The chips will fall where they fall...but hopefully, we get BETTER!!!

Apparently, you do need to go back and read. The context was Mariota vs. Gabbert. I’m not saying Gabbert is better than Mary, but the fact that this is and has been an argument for a while should be cause for concern. And, no one ever argued that Peyton’s backups where equal or better than him.

You don’t seem to understand that people can create an argument out of anything. Just like it was when people were comparing our team with Locker and with Manning.

Lol. No doubt. Mariota needed competition regardless of what anyone thinks of him personally. Gabby wasn’t cutting it. I honestly feel like Jrob and Vrabel are growing tired of the injuries and inconsistency, but I guess time will tell. Regardless, it’s an exciting time to be a Titans fan. I’m pumped and I gotta give props to Jrob thus far....Awesome job.

Why don't you link some of the Locker is better than Manning threads. I don't remember them and would love to read some people saying Locker is better than Manning. Manning did kind of suck in Denver though.

One great year and one terrible year...I would have taken him for both to get that great year.

Locker was better. There’s no debate threads because there is no debate about it.

iirc it was more about Manning encroaching on Lockers space and hindering his development.

Cant recall which posters took that stance but that was definitely a days long debate at one point

Yeah there were a few headscratcher comments, but it does seem most of those against Manning had good reasons.

Some context...

Remember Manning was coming off a neck injury and there was some question as to whether that would affect his throwing....and how long he'd still be able to play. I think if everyone knew he'd be awesome the next year...we'd all have signed up for that to make a SB run.

I have decided that we are in a Drew Brees situation with Tannehill.

Brees was a "good" QB in San Diego but not "franchise" level, so they moved on from him. Obviously he went to New Orleans and became one of the best ever.

Same situation unfolding in Tennessee. Tannehill = Brees 2.0 ;)

Also, IMO, the root cause of Mariota being inconsistent and a "4th quarter" hero is because he is a rhythm QB. Mariota needs pass plays early and often. He would play much better in a pass heavy offense where he can get into rhythm early. Being stuck in an run-heavy offense year after year hurts him.

Yea waiting to throw til 3rd downs is so dumb

Need to pass more, but this staff and the last 2 dont believe in that philosophy...
