This is a GREAT pickup.

I have always liked Tannehill and thought he could have been one of the better QBs in league if not for injuries. While I think Mariota has more talent, Tannehill performs better regularly, more consistently.

My biggest frustration with Mariota is not necessarily that he is injury prone, but that he doesn't seem to be able to play through injuries like most QBs do. Any little boo boo and he is out. Also, he is infuriatingly inconsistent. He will show flashes, have a great game and then crap the bed for 2 games.

If I am JRob/Vrable, I start Tannehill. I feel he gives the Titans the best chance to CONSISTENTLY play well and if he gets hurt, Mariota is a fantastic backup, who is good for only a few good games a year, so maybe its the perfect situation.

Tannehill with the weapons we have (Davis, Walker, Lewis and Humph) will throw for 4000 yards/20+ TDs easily.

So I understand your point...but here's the problem. Let's say Tanny is consistent and plays to a low 90's QB rating. We'll need the team to carry him and it's difficult (not impossible) to win a SB that way. Also, that means you gave up on Mariota and we'd get more bang for our buck by trading him for a high draft pick.

Given Tanny's recent past, would you sign him to a long term $25mil/yr contract? The Dolphins are not good and they got rid of him so they wouldn't have to pay him like 17-18mil/year. That's not a good sign.

While I think everyone would agree that Mariotas inconsistency has been his biggest problem (besides his health), he does play a good chunk of games at a very high level...which is offset by a good chunk of games at a backup level. I think the Titans will ride with Mariota unless he's still hurt or has some permanent nerve damage or Tanny REALLY outplays him throughout. While I don't think JRob and Vrabel will look at this as a qb competition per se...it is what it is and if Tanny is lights out better, he'll become the starter.

I think JRob's mindset is to get a real starter caliber backup (check) because of Mariota's injury history and ALSO in case Mariota has a bad season then maybe we give Tanny a try and see how he looks in our offense. Essentially both players are on one year contracts so it's deliver or bye bye.

MM8 will get a new, HUGE contract soon....should make this forum fun.

I thought you were sleeping til Mahomes! Welcome back Big!!!

I think Mariota will have to earn that contract. I don't think they'll sign him to a huge contract until they see him play (to make sure none of these injuries have messed him up physically) and play well.

People already counting Mariota out and we could have our franchise QB.

Y’all do realize Tannehil was just released right? And y’all are cheering for the outsider who already got the boot over our guy who’s helped get this franchise to where it is now.

Honestly, some of y’all need to jump in front of a train

The grass is always greener...

This should be an exciting year!

The real question is how bad would MM8 have to play for Tanny to become an option. Vrabs seems like he's quick to replace people.

Don't do the insult thing or I'll make you cry and you'll scream to get me banned.

You've rooted against him all season along with 520 and ABC and he's played at an "elite" level regardless if you want to talk about inconsistency. He's beaten "elite' talent as well.

You suck at football and are just a hater who happens to somehow be attached to our team. You and other Mariota haters have that in common. You suck. Looking at your profile pictures is like a beta male physical sports hating convention.

You hardly ever hear actual athletes talk so bad about GOOD players in the league. Even if there are critiques. Because actual athletes know eventually you have to step on the field/court.

Hahahahaha...I struck a nerve....can’t take the heat, stay out of the kitchen boss...You’ve been on those nuts since I can’t remember.

Mariota has had select flashes of being a superstar, nothing more.
“Elite” already gets thrown around too much and it doesn’t describe Mariota at all.

When the hell has he ever played at an elite level? He's thrown fewer TDs combined in the past two years than a good QB throws in one. Mahomes doubled his 2 year TD production in 1 season. Every single player around him who you bash is elite if you only count their good games .

I don’t need to go back and read it. You said that arguing Mariota is better than Tannehill to any rational person shows he isn’t the franchise guy.

Then I pointed out an example (on this forum nonetheless) where people were saying we don’t need Peyton Manning because we had Jake Locker. I, among many others, were arguing that point. So by your standards that means Peyton isn’t a franchise QB because he was being compared to and argued over Jake Locker.

Just playing devils advocate and showing you that just because someone is arguing that x is better than y doesn’t mean anything - especially on this board. It’s a silly point you were trying to make.
Apparently, you do need to go back and read. The context was Mariota vs. Gabbert. I’m not saying Gabbert is better than Mary, but the fact that this is and has been an argument for a while should be cause for concern. And, no one ever argued that Peyton’s backups where equal or better than him.

A couple of things I'll point out.

LOL!

So if anyone suggests a comparison of a backup and a starter...the starter is automatically no longer able to be a franchise QB? Funny!

Someone suggested a comparison between the two in a single game. Most backups have 1 good game. The very POINT of my post is to compare one game is meaningless. Mariota is vastly superior...and that's in a bad year for him.

So you haters can chill. Mariota either will or will not get it done this year. If he does, he gets signed and you guys can cry or get on board. If he doesn't, we'll see how Tanny does and then look for a new QB in the next good QB class.

It's gonna get played out one way or the other...so not much point in hating now.
There’s a bigger picture here. The Mariota vs. Gabbert debate has been going on a while. That’s a problem. I’m not a Mariota hater, but I am being realistic in my evaluation of his play while he’s been a Titan. Nothing suggests he will turn into a franchise QB this season. I wish he would, but chances are slim. The truth is, we have two average at best NFL QBs on the roster. That is better than what we did have, but let’s not pretend either of them are long term answers.

My critiques of Mariota was not taking off fast enough in the pocket/pocket awareness. And his ball security early on. The fumbles got me more than most of his picks. I think he's definitely improved on ball security and has consistently got better with pocket awareness. Especially at the end of last year. Then he got injured.

My concern is moving on too early from a piece you'll have the longest on your team. Even as Mariota ages he'll still be faster than most QB's. He'll prob never be "slow" if he takes care of his body and avoids big injuries. You never know if he can be better than Watson or Luck until we see him with some consistency on offense, weapons, and a staff that lets him air it out. I think we'll finally get to see that this year.

I think it'll only be an injury that sets him back. I think he's an elite competitor who has the skillset to be an elite NFL QB. If he is, we still need a Tennehill or other top backup because we'll be playing for wins (playoffs) and security if we make it and have an injury. I think we've neglected the backup QB spot too long.

I'm happy with the pickup but tired of the unwarranted hate Mariota gets (not that he doesn't have critiques).

I'd love nothing more than for Mariota to work out.

I am still not convinced he will. I think there are things that should have been fixed by now that havent been. I even acknowledge the surrounding factors that have hampered and hurt his progression.

Straight up about injuries.. ...an injury and missing a few games and I 100% believe we will move on and I wouldnt blame them at all.

I was also concerned about moving on too quick but hes entering year 5...its time to see some of the things that should have been fixed already, to be fixed.

I believe he still has a high ceiling, but I question whether he can actually reach it.

Some of these "haters" are level headed and have good points.

Others, you just have to ignore. Itll make your life a lot easier.

I’ve said numerous times on here I want him to succeed...I’ve also said he needed more competition behind him. I was behind him without criticism for years before I started, and trust me, it’s warranted. It’s ridiculous that he can’t be criticized while being constantly injured and putting up subpar numbers. The real haters here are the Mariota loves that can’t take the warranted and deserved criticism...Cjthebeast hanging his head on the bar crying that his boy is running out of excuses and actually has competition and on the hot seat. That’s reality.

by page 12 everyone immediately went full retard. Tannehill is a good QB2 who can be insurance, and run wildcat packages. Marcus will be the starter, play well, and we will go 11-5 this year and have a playoff run.

Just a reminder, debating is fine but leave the personal jabs out. The Mariota conversation as we all know is a hot topic. If you find yourself banging your head against the wall with certain members :wall: and letting it get to that point, i highly recommend the ignore option which is free of charge.

Probably a ton of posts on here that I don't see because of that feature.

Let me help you and other blind homers out:

2017:

Games Played
Marcus Mariota: 14
Ryan Tannehill: 11

Touchdowns
Marcus Mariota: 11
Ryan Tannehill: 17

Interceptions
Marcus Mariota: 8
Ryan Tannehill: 9

Rating
Marcus Mariota: 92.3
Ryan Tannehill: 92.7

So while you get all dramatic, rolling your eyes because I'm so right-

If you think this coaching staff doesn't expect Tannehill to be in consideration for the starting spot, your loyalty is stronger than your rationale.

:)

This is a good day.

Tannehill WILL outplay him in camp. I promise you. So go ahead and get upset about the pending controversy now and get it out of your systems.

Wildcat QB had more passing TDs than the precious Flota.

520 has been a hater since before we even drafted him. He cherry picks stats or makes stuff up to bash him. A lot of people follow/echo those sentiments and constantly pointing out mistruths is time consuming and since it goes around and around...not worth my time.

There is a difference between being a hater who bashes him no matter what and someone who is disappointed with where he’s at or has lost hope of him being our franchise qb long term.

I have not been a part of the gabbert Mariota debate but I don’t understand it beyond the avg misguided nfl fan who always longs for the backup qb until they actually get him. 10mins later they want the starter back. Was anyone watching our last game thinking yes...we have Gabbert over Mariota so we’re going to the playoffs? If that was you...please stand up and be counted.

Or someone give me the short version of how they think Gabbert is as good as Mariota? Or better?

The fact is that the difference between top tier qb’s and backups comes down to a few factors and usually the most important factors are ceiling and consistency. Mariota has the ceiling but not the consistency yet. If he doesn’t find it soon he won’t get too many chances in the league.

Gabbert doesn’t have the ceiling nor the consistency to be a starter and his lack of consistency even for a backup won’t let him stay in the league too long unless he improves.

We will know soon enough whether we’ll have Mariota long term, Tanny long term, Tanny as a bridge and mortgaging the house to draft another ‘franchise’ prospect.

Let’s hope we have the roster to make the playoffs and give us a chance at something big this year. By the end of the season (or earlier) we’ll KNOW what’s up.
