So to be clear, you're advocating we lowball (lose) Mariota and think we're gonna draft a qb at the end of round 1 or 2 or 3 and they will come in as rookies and give us as good a chance to win in year 1? The odds are stacked HEAVILY against you!

NFL coaches and scouts look at a class in 2 ways...who are starters (or potential starters) and who are backup candidates. In general, 1st rounders are starters, 2nd rounders could be starters, 3rd rounders is where backups start or seriously undersized starters begin.

Which execs have you talked to that think this is a deep starting qb class? I don't care about deep backups since we are discussing who's gonna start next year on ostensibly a playoff team?

When did I say anything about Tennessee drafting a QB? Lol

If Marcus doesn’t have many suitors this off-season we have no need to sign him to a long term contract. It’s all about leverage.

If there aren’t many/any teams offering him a long term deal with huge guarantees -why should we?

You keep trying to argue one specific scenario which is highly unlikely. Try answering my question. If Mariota and Tannehill sign somewhere else...who is our starting QB in 2020???

It shouldn't have been this close. We were something like 2/9 on third down prior to the Browns' collapse. That really shouldn't happen with chain movers like Humphries, Walker, Davis, Henry, and now Brown.

This close? Didn't we blow them out and Mariota threw 3 TD passes???

So can we agree Mariota was very effective for 3 quarters and had one bad quarter (quarter #2)?

We were much better on third down last year and should be better moving forward. I don't think that it should have been that close for the majority of 3 quarters.

Effective, sure. But he was put in position to where we could run the ball and execute one-read PA at a high rate. Any QB in the league should be effective in such a favorable situation. He struggled mightily with regular drop backs, and he was bailed out by a long field goal after a really dumb sack to make it a two score game. That made all of the difference, as it was clear that the Browns were trying to push the ball down the field to make up the point difference and played right into what Pees wanted to do.

We were 30th in passing attempts and 7th in YAC. The defense allowed 13 points and forced 3 INTs and 5 sacks. The team was excellent. Mariota was just there, really.

Only thing we can agree on is we didn't watch the same game. Mariota was bad most of the game. Two of his 3 tds were gimmes that really should have gone to Henry since he was the one who ran us all the way down to the 9 yard line and then they let Mariota toss it in to pad his stats. Even then that came after the Browns defense quit and just let Henry run all over them. When they were still in the game and trying, they had Mariota looking like a rookie.

It’s not highly unlikely lol I’ve stated why. No one can name a realistic team that would be willing to sign Marcus to a long term deal with big guaranteed money.

Why wouldn’t we be able to sign Tannehill? He is clearly the backup plan for 2020. He or Marcus will be our starting QB week 1 2020. No doubt about it.

Because it’s stupid at this point. At this time last year, Blake Bortles had played one game into his new contract. Now he’s backing up Goff. I wonder if there were Eagles fans sitting around huffing glue (as Eagles fans do) talking bout “We’ll keep Foles, there isn’t anywhere for him to go”. This is so stupid to debate.

Teams want good QB.

QB play good, teams want.

QB play bad, teams not want.

Just like EVERY year in the NFL. And we’ve pointed out countless examples of this happening.

Lol that Bortles deal was signed knowing they were moving on from him after one year if he didn’t have a good season.

And people have been calling Foles to the Jags for a while lmao most predictable FA signing of all time.

While we are on the subject though. How many teams were interested in Nick Foles? How many made a contract offer?

I’m sorry you can’t understand that there are a lot of teams around the league who are already committed to a QB for the next few years. Do you need me to do a team by team breakdown for you?

I don’t think you’re giving any credit to Cleveland or specifically their DL. They had a solid pass rush all game and stopped the run early. That is the recipe for a close game by itself.
Once Henry started going and the D got a couple TO, the Cleveland D was gassed.

That's why a game is 4 quarters.

Pats - Brady just signed an extension through 2021
Bills - drafted Josh Allen
Jets - drafted Sam Darnold
Dolphins - ?? potential top 5-10 pick will take their own rookie QB

Texas - Watson
Jags - Signed Foles last year (and no they can't get out of that deal after one season)
Colts - ?? Maybe but they could also just re sign Brissett

Steelers - Big Ben signed through 2021
Ravens - drafted Lamar Jackson
Browns - drafted Baker Mayfield
Bengals - Andy Dalton signed through 2020. Potential top 10 pick.

Chiefs - Patrick Mahomes
Raiders - Derek Carr signed through 2022
Broncos - Joe Flacco still under contact but will likely be released; also drafted Drew Lock in the 2nd round. Also potential top 10 pick.
Chargers - Phillip Rivers is a FA but is on the record saying he wants to play 2 more years (Chargers' Philip Rivers: Not planning to retire anytime soon)

Dallas - Dak sounds like they are nearing an extension with him
Eagles - just signed Carson Wentz
Redskins - drafted Dwayne Haskins
Giants - drafted Daniel Jones

Packers - Aaron Rodgers
Vikings - Kirk Cousins signed through 2020
Lions - Matt Stafford signed through 2022
Chicago - drafted Mitch Trubisky.

New Orleans - Drew Brees signed through 2021
Panthers - Cam Newton signed through 2020
Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan signed through 2023
Tampa Bay - ?? likely top 5-10 pick and will pick their own rookie

49ers - Jimmy G signed through 2022
Rams - just signed Goff
Seattle - just signed Wilson
Cardinals - just drafted Kyler Murray

So at best there are 3 teams that don't have someone in place for 2020. 2 of which will most likely be picking in the top of the draft... and a deep QB class coming out a team could easily fall in love and draft a guy instead of committing huge money to one.

Didn’t read it. It’s too long. I still stand that if Mariota is better than other quarterbacks, he will have a market, just like every year.

Thanks for being honest about not reading it...but I think you should so you understand where the league and where Mariota will likely fall into if he has a good season.

I understand your stance and your point of view (thanks for summarizing) but I just don't agree with it.

If there were too many good QB's, you wouldn't have Jared Goff (who is NOT the 4th best QB in the league) getting a huge contract extension that makes him the 4th highest paid QB. In an overabundant market, teams don't overpay, the players get less. In this market, the players are getting more...A LOT MORE!!! That's how you know there are too few good qb's...not too many!

The difference between Goff and Marcus is that Goff is a year or possibly two years younger and had the Rams in the SB. Goff sucks either way but I think comparing Marcus situation in TEN to Goff's in LA is entirely different. Based on team successes.

You read it. You just are in too deep now to admit you didn’t think your post all the way through.

Marcus was especially bad in the second quarter, which would have helped the run game a lot. Cleveland was stacking the box and he wasn't delivering to open receivers, even with a clean pocket.

good thing he threw those 3 TDs to win the game then

Marcus was average at best vs the Browns last Sunday. Anyone that thinks he was good is just lying through their teeth.

I've seen pretty much nothing that gives me hope that he has improved. Will his stats be better this year? Sure. But his bad habits and his mechanics are awful in the pocket. Last Sunday was good proof. Hes awareness is really bad. Dude doesnt know how to avoid pressure, he actually does the opposite and goes right where its coming from and ends up getting tackled by his own OL.

Watching Deshaun in the pockett avoid pressure and use his footwork is something I wish I would of seen from Marcus. Unfortunately that isnt going to happen. The guy is in his 5th year and still has the same issues his had since his rookie year.
