has a nfl player ever sued another nfl player for something that happened during a game?

No. It’s happened a few times in the NHL though. A couple of players have criminally pressed chargers and won due to on ice incidents, there was significant injuries in both cases.

I’d argue the culture in the NFL locker room is different than the NHL

How so ? Just Curious. I was just mentioning the NHL because that’s the only other contact sport that I know of where players have charged other players due crazy illegal behavior.

What Garrett did is unacceptable and cannot be justified by any means. He deserves 6 game suspension.

However, if I understand it correctly, the Steelers QB committed the first personal foul by grabbing and twisting Garrett's facemask in the pile. Then DeCastro and Pouncy came in as things were escalating and started grabbing and shoving Garrett.

My point is that there is a reason that Garrett doesn't have a history this sort of thing. He knows he lost it, knows that is unacceptable. But the Steelers shouldn't be coming off like Garrett wasn't provoked by Rudolph to begin with and that DeCastro and Pouncy are blameless in the escalation of the situation. Without the two of their behavior, no way this escalates into what Garrett did.

DeCastro and Pouncey were defending their QB after Garrett ripped off his helmet. Let's understand that even if you consider Rudolf to have started it (Garrett clearly would/should have gotten a penalty for roughing the qb), Garrett continued to escalte it by ripping Mason's helmet off.

This situatuon is on Garrett and no one else.

Garrett went stupid in this situation no doubt, and the ref should have thrown a flag for roughing, but Rudolf definitely was more culpable than he was held accountable for. He clearly was ripping/pulling at the back of Garrett’s helmet and it was pretty obvious what he was trying to do. He should have gotten a suspension as well (guess they’ll hit him with a substantial fine as a “make up”). Better question is why with 8 seconds, and down 14, was Tomlin throwing the ball ? There was a 0.00% chance they could have won that game, that’s not being competitive it’s just being stupid. The NFL got 90% of this right except for the punishment for the Rudolph part imo.

NHL:
25 games:
Chris Simon, New York Islanders, March 11, 2007, for the rest of the regular season (15 games) and Stanley Cup Playoffs for swinging his stick and hitting New York Rangers forward Ryan Hollweg in the face.

MLB:
In the bottom of the third inning, Marichal infamously clubbed Dodgers catcher John Roseboro over the head with a bat, an action never seen before or again on a major league field. August 22, 1965. Penalty: Marichal was suspended for eight game days (10 games because of doubleheaders) and fined a then-record $1,750 (which translates to about $15,000 today).

I remember when Todd Bertuzzi broke Steve Moore's neck when he attacked Moore from behind. The NHL really showed him. The whole next season was the lockout season and the NHL suspended him for all of it.

Yes

Hackbert v. Cincinnati Bengals, Inc., 601 F.2d 516 (10th Cir. 1979)

I remember reading the case in law school

Maybe the NFL will just suspend him for the rest of the season because they got so many views and so many people were talking about it.

Got any details and results?

In a nutshell, Bengal's defensive back Dale Hackbart attempted to block Denver Broncos' wide receiver Charles "Booby" Clark. After the play had passed them by, Booby, "acting out of anger and frustration" struck the back of Hackbart's head with his forearm. It was later discovered that Hackbart had suffered a career ending neck fracture. Without ruling on Booby's liability, the court held that tort law is not inapplicable to sports and a finding of recklessness is required to impose liability. In other words, the player could sue another player, at the very least in Colorado as the case arose out of Colorado.

Haynesworth was suspended 5 games for his stomping incident. This is pretty comparable to Garrett's, in my opinion.

You can't try to kill people.

Those were some of the sawftest kicks I've ever seen. It looked like Pouncey knew he had to do something, but he really didn't feel like defending a dude who threw 4 picks.
