Not really. Even Mariota admits its was a bonehead play. Why waste a play? Should called a hitch, quick out or just ran for the sideline would have left 11 seconds and time for one more quick out to pick up another 5-15 yards.

And like I said- it wasn’t the ONLY bad play. That one was just really bad for a 5th year QB.

This is overblown. The reality is the letting the clock run the possession before (when we were losing) and the playcalling in 2mins were bigger problems. But let's take your scenario....

There are 17 seconds left when the Titans are ready to snap the ball...let's say Mariota takes 2 seconds to call a play and they run a hitch for 3 yards and they don't get out of bounds. When the play starts there is 15 seconds. By the time the play is run...there is roughly 10 seconds left...which is about the amount of time most NFL teams take to line up and spike it. So we are 3 yards closer and MAYBE have a shot at not running out of time. And even if we do...that's a LONG FG...probably a career long for Santos...who had just missed a 45 yarder.

Spiking the ball wasn't a bad play per se...but a better play would have been to flood one sideline and try and hit someone in the 10-15 yard range and get out of bounds. You get it, you have a decent shot at a fg and the clock is stopped. You don't get it, you have 4th down anyway. For this same reason, I didn't like the slants call. It's obvious and easier to defend.

But the real culprit happens earlier...both in Vrabel letting the clock run all the way down on the previous possession when we were losing as well as some of the playcalls in 2min at the beginning. Why is DW running a 3-5yd route where he can't get out of bounds? You can't trade a 5 yard gain for 15 seconds of clock when you have too far to go and no TO's.

This is a designed play to Humphries in case you hadn't noticed. They were trying to catch the Colts napping but they played it well.
Then it's absolutely terrible execution. Humphries is looking for the ball at the Hashmark, but doesn't get it until he's on the number 50. The LB had all day to react. The really was the plan?

The spike lost us an opportunity to get more yards. We’re talking about 3-5 seconds. There were only going to be 3 downs maximum including the kick with 16 seconds left. Spiking the ball- you MUST convert on the 4th down. We didn’t. You try on 3rd down instead of spiking, you have 10-12 seconds left if you convert- you’ve a TON of field that is in play. If you DON’T convert, you have another down 3-5 seconds to get 3 or more yards with 7-10 seccond left. And still likely have another play to advance another 5-10 yards.

The only thing that was achieved with spiking the ball was wasting the down. Even Mariota says it was a bad decision. He’s taking a lot of heat for that decision because 5th year QB’s shouldn’t be making that sort of bonehead play.

Um...your logic doesn't work. If you run a play on 3rd down in the field of play and have 10 seconds left...you might not even have enough time to line up and spike it...which takes 10-12 seconds depending on how good the team is at it. So how could you run that play, line the offense up (taking 0 seconds???) and most likely never spike it in time.

If you fail at that play, a quick sideline play and out of bounds is your ONLY option as you'd be running the play with 10-12 seconds and obviously no spike attempt after the plays chews a few seconds off the clock.

A lot of teams do spike the ball on 3rd down there and want the extra time to get the right play called. And not sure if it was Mariota or Smith who called for the spike (I know Mariota said it was him...but he says everything is his fault).

Plus, it looks like on the spike play that Davis isn't lined up properly which would have pretty much ended the game if called.

There is no logic in that scenario. You WASTE A DOWN clocking it on 3rd down and 2 yards with 16 seconds left. Even Mariota says it was the wrong decision. You’re the one having a problem understanding that what you’re promoting is the WRONG choice in clock management in that scenario. It simply is not the best choice. The best choice is to use the down to get 3 or more yards in 3-5 seconds.

This is not the best choice. The best choice is a corner type sideline pass that nets you 10-15 yards and let's your wr step out of bounds. Takes 5-6 seconds, gets you a FD, and puts you in FG range.

A 3yd pass that doesn't get out of bounds takes a hell of a lot longer than 3-5 seconds from snap to play time to line up to spike. Then most likely your last play got you 3 yards. We needed more for a realistic fg shot.

Everyone talking about how much of a bust Corey Davis is despite him constantly being open and not having a QB who can get him the ball.

Mariota would make any WR short of Randy Moss look like a bust.

"Spiking the ball wasn't a bad play per se..." - @Gut

Imagine typing that and not deleting it.

Jesus effing christ...

Ah...so asking a question so I can see what he's talking about means I'm supporting someone or something?

SMH
Bruh you're in full on "all out defense/deflection" mode.

And it's embarrassing.

Generally long-winded but intelligent. But when it comes to Mariota, you're the last moron left on the island.

It's funny. You guys claim Mariota just stares down his primary wr but when he doesn't, then you ask why?

The wr is taught to look for the ball as soon as he releases but the qb is trying to hold the lb inside. He tried to give Humphries a head start but the LB took a perfect angle and Humphries couldn't beat him one on one. If he throws it earlier when Humph first looks...then you're gonna get a shorter gain if Humph can beat his guy because the other defenders will be closer.

Their D simply beat us on that play. Defenses win on plays too. It's not always this guy played poorly or that guy played poorly. Sometimes the D wins that play.

I haven't watched enough of their D, but I'm guessing Smith thought that LB would be spying Mariota which...given Humphries blocking on the blitz...would make him wide open. The D had a better play and executed it well.
