I think this completely a cap space number game. JRob knows he has got to re-sign some of our top guys to big contracts after this season.

that would matter if it was a 1 year deal
*Edit for typo: wouldn’t

I'd like to get him just like everyone else here. But I'm also going to trust our GM who was director of player personnel for 3 years while MCoy was on the team in Tampa. He was due 13M/yr for the next 3 years and Tampa decided to release him after not being able to trade him.

Great player, but there is a little bit of smoke here.

Yeah. You don’t just let guys walk that easily, and even if you do, others would scoop him immediately. He left Cleveland without a contract, I wonder if he is still a high level guy?

There are 10 teams reportedy interested. I think he's at least still viewed as a hight level guy. I'm thinking price will be the main factor although an 11 million offer has been reported as well.

It would matter. Teams are allowed to “roll over” some cap space from one year to the next. Right now we have just over 30 million left we could add to next years space to try and lock up some of our vets.

I feel like you probably have a typo in here. But a 1 year does affect next year's cap due to carry over. And there's a few significant guys that might be looking at handsome raises.

Yeah sorry it was a typo
But we can carry over 100% of unused cap money to the next year, correct?

That's correct. So as much as I wanted Suh or McCoy, I also understand JR wanting that cushion to roll over into 2020 as there's some key names that will be up for extension. If there was a legit Super Bowl shot I'd say do it, but I don't see that ever being the case unless Mariota proves he can stay healthy, or we get a new QB.

These are ridiculous! Why would the Jets make that trade...sending Williams to us for Austin Johnson and Conklin? Conklin played horribly last year and hasn't proven he can start this year. But even if he CAN...they'd be right back to having to sign a player to a big contract since Conklin's 5th year option was not picked up. Why wouldn't they just keep Williams and sign him?

And IF we wanted to spend big money on another DL, why trade and sign Williams when we could have just signed Suh or McCoy?

Keep in mind, there is a rule that team's must stay at a minimum of 89% of the cap over a 3 year period I believe. So if we save up a large chunk of money...we will need to spend it. Obviously, Mariota and Conklin will play a big role in this (as to whether or not we want to extend them) as they will want big money. And obviously, we have others like Byard, etc. too.
