Just finished the Jurassic Parks, and something I don’t understand why they did/didn’t add in the movies, were the descriptive rotting smells of the carnivores. It really added an amazing layer and a more frightening atmosphere. I dot understand why they made the T Rex eyesight based on movement. It evens mentions this not being a case in the book.

I’m on Heavier Than Heaven now, a biography on Kurt Cobain. I’ve got Blood Meridian and The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck up next.

Well the original JP novels were techno horror which is what Crichton did. Congo, JP, Andromeda Strain, Sphere and so one.

He was King except tech instead of paranormal.

An honest translation of JP to the screen would be gore and a hard R rating. It would also be way better than the films we got.

It would be fantastic as an HBO series like Westworld. Timeline, another good book from Crichton made into a shit movie would also be a great series.

If you want another Crichton book in the same style as JP read "Micro". He died before he could finish it so another writer finished it for him. It isn't as good as JP but it scratches that itch.

Micro is like Antman meets Jurassic Park or Honey I Shrunk the Kids but rated very hard R for violence and gore.

I fall in the camp that actually enjoyed all three movies. But I firmly believe that the second one would have been much better had it gone by the book. They could have added in the rotten smell and left out that vision deal and made it much better imo.

I understand they’d never show these details in a Dino movie because kids are going to drive these movies profit line, but amazon/Starz are making Neil Gaiman series and they are pretty good. Another streamer could do the same.

I like his writing style and enjoyed Congo, will probably pick that and Andromeda Strain up soon as well as Micro.

Congo is so much fun. I read that book over and over as kid.

It's the Heart if Darkness but modern, well 30 years ago modern. The tech in it holds up though.

Cell phones kind of exist but you're in the middle of the African Jungle so there's no service.

The movie is unwatchable. They destroyed it.

I miss his writing style. Techno thriller/horror.

The Annihilation books are good. The movie was good as well.

I loved the movie as a kid! Granted it was my first sort of “violent” movie.

His books/films manage to hold up, they don’t get dated.

I’ve always thought timeline would make for a great miniseries. That movie is a disgrace. Timeline is probably my favorite book. Definitely my favorite Crichton novel.

Yea the movie was ass.

It would make a great cable series on like HBO.

I was so excited when the movie came out in like highschool. It was ass though

Finished Heavier Than Heaven. A Kurt Cobain biography. I enjoyed it, changed my opinion about Kurt. Sounds like he was a bit of an asshole before he even tried heroin.

Started Blood Meridian, can already tell I’m going to enjoy it.

Blood Meridian isn't even that old of a novel but is easily in the top 10 American novels ever written easily.

A Blood Meridian film has been in development hell forever. It's would be pretty controversial and extremely violent if done faithfully to the novel.

It's depictions of American Imperialism in the west, genocidal violence by Americans and some dark commentary on I think American Protestantism though the themes are gnostic. Really Cormac's end vision of where it eventually leads. Ritual violence and eventual rejection of the benevolent vision of the Christian god in the west replaced by one made of ritual violence and disdain for human life. It would probably be pretty controversial in our modern political and social climate.

A gruesome read.

I've thought a lot about a screen adaptation. You need someone with a real vision, and you need to find someone that will do justice to The Judge. I think visually speaking, innaritu is the right choice for director. The look and tone of The Revenant really screamed Blood Meridian to me. But I think most people are scared to do it because the material is so heavy and dense and beloved.

James Franco did a screen test for it that wasn't very good.

edit: P.T. Anderson would do a great job too i think

His novels have translated pretty well on screen, well I haven't read the books, but they've been gruesome enough. Any director worth their salt should know what they are getting into.

Edit- Honestly, I think now is probably the best time to do it. To be frank, and not even sugar coat it.....conservatives aren't spending money on entertainment these days.

The Road is one of the most faithful book to film translations ever. It's almost scene for scene. Well done.

All the Pretty Horses was average, No Country for Old Men is obviously a masterpiece.

Child of God was not good. I didn't care for the book though to be honest.

The Sunset Limited wasn't a novel but a play and HBO filmed it with Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L Jackson and it's a masterpiece in my opinion.

All the Pretty Horses should be put to film again. Really that Border Trilogy would all translate to film well.

Cormac is my favorite writer by a long shot. It's not even close.

Blood Meridian is so fantastic. I still read The Road every year or so. Reading The Road again after having a child is an even larger gut punch. Just beautiful.

I'm trying to read 25 books a year, and plan on reading atleast another or two, of McCormac's.

I finished A Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck.

I don't know how I feel about it. On one hand I think 'thats a lot of good advice and a general good ethos' and on the other I feel like the only reason its popular is because it says 'fuck' on the cover. IMO, its the Ayn Rand of self help books. Bringing nothing new to the table and only really heard of because its edgy.
