So I recently read this article about how Mariota plans to add about 10lbs of weight this offseason to try and help his durability. In 2018 Mariota played at around 215lbs, which is just about 10lbs below league average of 225lbs. But I question whether adding weight is going to solve the problem.
Case in point: Ben Rothlisberger. Rothlisberger has only played a full 16 games in a season ONCE since he entered the league in 2004, and clocks in at a whopping 240lbs. Dude has injured nearly every part of his body since entering the league.
Meanwhile the other most injury prone QBs of the last 15 years:
Matt Stafford: 232 lbs.
Andrew Luck: 234 lbs.
Sam Bradford: 228 lbs.
Jay Cutler: 233lbs.
Not exactly string beans.
If you think adding weight is the key to Mariota increasing durability, why?
If you think there is something else he can do to prevent injury, what?
Context is the key here. Adding weight for the sake of adding weight isn't the answer. BUT...in general, a 240lb guy getting hit by a 240lb lb is a lot better off than a 215lb guy. But how they get hit and by whom is important. Mariota could probably add 15-20lb's and as long as he does a lot of flexibility stuff, should maintain his flexibility.
But best thing for him is to not get hit. That means improving the OL (we're doing that), improve the receiving core so someone is open (doing that), keep Mariota in the same system so he doesn't have to learn a new offense so HE can be better (did that), improve the run game since that can minimize # of 3rd and 10+yds (doing that), and be careful in playcalling (HOPEFULLY do that).
The Colts wanted to minimize the hits Luck took last year so what did they do...drastically improved the OL, got him a good TE option as a safety blanket, improved the run game, and stayed balanced between a quick passing game where he gets the ball out quickly...and max protect when they want to go deep. Results were excellent for them in terms of Luck staying mostly clean. It's a good recipe for us. But we can do more easy stuff like rolling Mariota out on quick play-action's.
