Completely agree with everything but one point. I think the OLine is doing a lot better. Nate Davis seems to be working out at guard and should only get better. Conklin is doing much better as is Lewan and Saffold. Jones concerns me but he has been extended, so is not going anywhere. So what is there to build? Next year, I am sure we will move forward with what we have...unless we move on from Conklin.

I think our focus is the front seven and improving our pass rush. After we sign RT and Henry...
Depth.

Davis really should only be a depth guy. Kelly is great as a backup. Another G or C (I’d be ok ditching Jones altogether) is the OL move.

Jones was and still a damn head scratcher why he was extended so soon? I would like a better C. Conklin is ok in spots but still not playing like he did before the injury.

How can we say Davis is only depth at this point. They drafted him to start and he is—and holding his own as a rookie. I would guess they plan on him starting next year. I just doubt we spend any top picks on oline. Maybe 4th round or lower.

Agree on that. And if we move on from Conklin I can live with it. We will see how the staff evaluates him. The risk is not being able to replace him with someone better.

Davis was not drafted to start. He played like he shouldn’t have been drafted at first.
I will say he’s playing better, but still plenty of room for improvement. Got no issue giving him more time with the team.
I do have issue with relying on him to be full time starter without any insurance whatsoever.

Moving on from Conklin May need to happen to cut costs on resigning everyone. If that was the case, no question, draft a RT.

I didn’t mean he was drafted to start this year but he was a third round pick so surely the plan was for him to eventually become a starter. You don’t draft a third round guard with the plan that he will be depth only.

I don’t think you expect a third rounder to be a starter possibly ever but certainly not after 1 marginally average, at best, season.

Third round is a hope for eventual starter, not expectation of anything more than rotational.
I’d say that for every position.

So you are only counting on 1st and 2nd rounders to start for you? I would definitely think a successful team needs to hit on third round picks as starters at least 1-4 times probably more. I guess we will see—what they do at the position will be telling.

You’re missing key words in what I’m saying.
I EXPECT guys drafted in the first 2 rounds to become starters. I’d say within the the first couple years too.
I don’t ever EXPECT a 3rd or higher draft pick to ever become a full time starter.

I fully agree that teams need to hit occasionally on those picks but I do t think GMs, owners, or coaches expect hits out of those picks, they just hope they’re scouting found a gem.

Now I do expect 3-5 rounders to play at a high enough level to be able to hang around in the NFL for a couple years at least. 3-4ths should be able to find their way into a depth spot or rotation (depending on position).

Nate Davis becoming the full time starter is exceeding what expectations were probably placed on him. I don’t think he’s playing well enough to be the full time starter BUT he is just a rookie. He is playing well enough to get more opportunities to prove he may be that good. I think it’s a big risk, and an accepted weak point if they don’t make any moves to attempt improving or at least trying to find an insurance player if Davis doesn’t improve.

Ok, that makes sense and I can get on board with that. Appreciate the thorough explanation. I will be interested to see what they do there—will tell us a lot about how they evaluate his performance so far...and/or how they feel they should beat use their money on perceived strengths and weaknesses.
