Great pick up! But are we talking about a backup QB here? If so, why give up the draft picks instead of signing say Bortles and keeping the picks?

It's only a late 4th round pick for a similar player to Mariota, so fits the scheme perfectly. And we didn't have to compete with other teams to sign him.

We know Marcus has the injury issues, so we got about the best insurance policy possible for a 4th.

Also Tanny>Bortles

I think this is reading into it too much. This move was made because Gabbert is hot garbage, and Mariota has never played a full season in his career. It's equivalent to them increasing their insurance coverage.

I agree. You are probably correct. I really can't tell if I am just being pessimistic, but something just seems off. You basically create a qb controversy with the first bad Mariota performance. You give up draft picks when other backups were out there without giving them up. Seems like things we would not want to do without a very good reason if this is an evaluation year or we expect to be contenders.

I am happy with the upgrade at QB. I am just not sold on giving up draft picks to get a backup. Maybe he though can push Mariota to reach his potential or out the door.

When the “starter” doesn’t finish seasons healthy... the backup is more important than ever.

Really like this move. Obviously can't bank on Mary for 16 games, so at least we'll have a pulse at QB.

Why is everyone so excited to get another injury prone QB? What am I missing...
I think the point you may be missing is that Tannehill is the closest thing we can get to a carbon copy backup of Marcus. Same physique, play style, mobility and yes even injury history. I understand this being a risky move because of Tannehill's injuries but as long as he's healthy if/when Marcus has to miss time then we'll be gravy.

I feel like Tannehill has an arm, is mobile and is way way better than any of the last backups we've had. As mentioned, he has legit starting experience and at the end of the day he wants a shot and knows that behind Marcus he'll likely get that shot.

This trade is getting roasted everywhere I look, which I don't really understand at all. We gave up a 4th next year, what does a 4th round pick really matter? You get a fringe starter there if all goes well.

At some point it may become we gave up a pick for our starter. Also gives us flexibility going in to next year if we decide to let Marcus walk, Tannehill could be a cheaper bridge option until we draft a replacement.

F what other people think. They “other people” are idiots.

We will get a comp pick (if we don't go crazy in FA) if Tanny signs somewhere else the following year.

“I talked to Ryan … and he understands that he is coming in as the back-up quarterback,” Robinson said. “I’ve talked to Marcus and told Marcus he is our starting quarterback. Ryan is here to help Marcus, to push Marcus, to compete with Marcus.

“And after talking with Marcus, he said: ‘One thing Jon that I believe with all my heart is that you try and do what’s best for the team and you try and put us in the best position to win football games.' And that made me feel pretty good.”

Jon Robinson says Titans salary cap guy Vin Marino hasn't called yet. "Til he says stop. I'll keep going."

Holy crap.

Yeaaahhhhh...

Teams bring in better QBs all the time for "insurance policies"....

"Coming in as..."

"to compete with"

The only way a GM would word it, initially.

Marcus is gonna be a good backup option, though.
