Looking at who was drafted after him, who else would you take?

Sutton Smith is the only even semi-reasonable argument, if you like undersized MAC players.

Jalen Ramsey was passed on by 4 GMs... He must suck

Fact of the matter is DeAndre was a heavy selection in 2nd round mocks across the sports community. Former scouts even had him pegged as 2nd-3rd round talent.

The REASON he was passed in 4 rounds was of need, and necessity... Some teams address them early, and others address them in the middle... From anaylsis of the draft, teams that NEEDED EDGES went early... For example, the Patriots... they NEEDED an EDGE - they addressed it in the 2nd. with Winovich..... Ergo they didn't need an edge in the 5th.

JROB was just playing the flow and timing of the draft. He saw EDGEs and DT's were flying off the board like crazy in the 1st and 2nd rounds - so he knew those same teams would be prodding at other needs in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th.. It's not a very hard analysis.
Then surely by your logic, there wasn’t an EDGE drafted between the 3rd and 5th rounds, right?

Because if he was passed over purely based on need and fit, there shouldn’t have been another Edge/OLB taken anywhere near or before him after pick 51, right?

Cmon man, quit being a Homer. Dude sunk like the Titanic, so we scooped him up. Stop calling him a steal, we stopped his free fall and that’s the bottom line.

I think he was a good pick as a very late 5th rounder.

...but 5th round was probably about right. He started 1 season, was decent but not great on a stacked team, then couldn't do any of the pre-draft stuff because of a surgery.

We might have lucked into a late bloomer and he has some potential/upside, but if someone took him in the 2nd, that is probably getting words in all these worst pick articles.

I wasn't aware I was a GEORGIA fan, Fabio......

That's such a dumb equivalency.

Why didn't any of those teams that needed a second round edge rusher grab Deandre Walker, who was supposedly a second round edge rusher? What about the teams that needed a third round edge rusher? A fourth round edge rusher?

That's a lot of guys who weren't at one time considered second round edge rushers going ahead of Walker.

I'm not saying it was a bad pick. I just don't get the adulation.

I didn't hear Vrabel say anything bad about him though saying he's good in meetings isn't a ringing endorsement either. Sounds like he's gonna be a bit of a project...but that's fine. We need him on special teams while he learns our OLB stuff and we'll see what we have. His first goal is to make the roster and be a special teams ace!

Go from there!

Order of operations:

Make the roster
Make a special teams unit
Perform well on special teams unit
Become special teams ace
Learn the duties and responsibilities of OLB
Crack the 5man OLB rotation
Make plays

If you're a 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick, this works. For later round guys, the order goes like this...

Perform well on special teams units
Become a starter on a special teams unti(s) which let's you...
Earn a roster spot.
Become special teams ace
Crack 4 man OLB rotation
Make plays and earn 50% playtime as either a pass rusher or run defender or both!

Walker was projected as a 2nd or 3rd round pick, and fell in the draft. So he must suck, otherwise all those teams would not have passed on him, right?

Simmons was a top 5 talent, fell to 19... sucks.
Brown was top 20, fell to 51.... sucks.
Hooker was rated in the 40s. Fell to the 4th round....sucks.
Long was rated as a 4th or 5th rounder. Fell to the 6th.... sucks.

I guess Nate Davis was our only good pick. Bummer.

Maybe the people who rate prospects suck.

Walker would never last on the practice squad. He'll be a high-end special teams player, and depth at a valuable position, so it's unlikely that he doesn't make the final 53

Unless he just outright sucks. Which is entirely possible. Reminds me of Akeem Ayers.

We’ll find out in camp.
