JRob was fired for a reason. That reason still haunted us this season. I don’t think true internal expectations were it all got fixed this year. The OL “replacements” are on Ran. I don’t see it rolling downhill to Vrabel yet.
Ran had very little cap space and draft capital to work with. But let’s take a look at what he did with the OL.
Going right to left.
The original plan was to continue developing NPF at RT. A Jrob pick that Vrabel was comfortable with. Then NPF gets himself suspended. Not Ran’s fault. He replaces NPF with Hubbard last minute who proves to be an excellent pickup, playing like a starter and shoring up the right side. Then he gets hurt. Not Ran’s fault.
At RG Ran brings in Daniel Brunskill for a song. Low priced free agent (we had very little cap space) who came in and played really solid all year when heathy. PFF had Brunskill as a top 20 Guard all year. But then he got hurt. Not Ran’s fault.
At Center things get trickier. This seems very much like a Vrabel choice to stick with his guy Brewer. I guarantee that wasn’t Ran’s decision. Ran brought back Corey Levin to back up Brewer but it was Vrabels decision to play mini mouse all season. This is maybe a little bit Ran’s fault but 90% Vrabels fault.
At LG Ran drafted a guy considered the top OL in the draft. The first several weeks of the season Skoronski looked like an immovable force and a star in the making. Then he needed an emergency appendectomy and lost 20lbs mid season. When he finally came back, Skoronski had lost some of the power he had before and played inconsistently the rest of the way between the worst LT and C in pass protection in the league. Skoronski could still be a stud and him getting hurt was not Ran’s fault.
Now we come to LT. Dillard was an absolute disaster. Ran didn’t have much cap room to spare, and took a swing on a guy coming from a Super Bowl team with first round pedigree. It was a huge failure. I don’t think anyone saw that coming though. Thankfully Ran structured his contract so that all the guaranteed money was in year one and we can easily dump him now with a post June 1 designation and just a $3.8m dead cap hit next season. Drafting a developmental tackle in Duncan was a good value where he was taken, but no one expected him to play this year.
All in all, I think Ran began the OL rebuild admirably and should be given the opportunity to take another shot at it with vastly more resources this off-season.
