I'm hearing so many people talking about our "need" for another edge rusher either in FA or the Draft, but I just don't personally feel like edge is a real need for us right now. I know a lot of people wanted us to splash out on Justin Houston or Zadarius Smith, but would that money have been worth it?

At this point, every indication is that Landry & Finch will start with Wake and Corea coming in as needed. That's a pretty promising group all things considered. Now Landry wasn't spectacular last year, but he was the top rated rookie pass rusher through the first 8 weeks and definitely showed promise. Meanwhile Wake was 11th in the league in pass rush grade and Finch was 19th.

Is that enough for the edge? Especially with Jayon Brown being a top 5 pass rushing ILB and Logan Ryan being a top 5 pass rushing CB? And Rashaan Evans can get in there too!

Personally I think we'd be far better off adding to our interior pass rush. Daquan, Logan and Austin Johnson didn't even crack the top 50 for pass rush last year. One guy on the interior that requires a double team could really free up those outside guys. Thoughts?

Did you not watch week 17 vs Indy?

Edge is about the biggest need we have

We play too many good QBs to just let stand in the pocket untouched

You sure that you didn't mean to say QB?

I don't tthink they are too high on the edge class. Guys like Burns and Ferrel will have questions as to how they will translate to the NFL, while interior DTs like Wilkins, Simmons, Lawrence, etc. are all pretty ideal. The value seems better in the first for DT

The Edge...is a great guitarist

The only way we could get any pressure was blitzing and yes edge is our greatest need and weakness. I like Finch but he was a real undrafted find. But I do not want him starting. You cannot blitz every down and in this division you have to get pressure on the qb, look what Luck does to us every time we play him.

Absolutely.
Casey needs help and hurries don’t do the job.

As brought up, week 17 against Luck is the game that is representative of this pass rush and how it needs to improve.

We get the bad luck of playing luck and Watson twice a year which means we need a good, consistent pass rush.

I actually turned on the week-17 game vs Luck last night, its scary how bad our rush was. Luck had all day to hammer us.

Look at this bull chit!

4 of those attempts were beyond 15 yards. He can get the ball out before any defender can realistically touch him. He's just incredibly hard to sack in a system which allows him to get the ball out quickly.

The chart may have not been the right choice to illustrate he had all damn day to throw it.

Fastest way to the QB is from the middle. I don’t care about edge pressure looping around the QB, I want someone to make him uncomfortable right in his face, where he can’t step into throws. That pressure pushes the QB to the edges for cleanup sacks. Casey is a loop player, we need someone inside like we have since Fat Al left.

Why do you think we bring A and B gap blitzes from our LBs so much? Because we’re trash inside.

Inside pressure makes everything else better.

True

but you dont have to overdraft inside DT's

fill that need with our 2nd pick.

Like Autism Johnson?

You keep talking about no edge talent being available after the first round, you should look at impact DTs.

It’s Fat Al time.

Just remember he made guys like Michelle Whiffin, Chris Hope and Cartland Finnegan All-Pro in the same year. IMPACT

After rewatching the highlights, the defense clearly wasn't the problem. If you allow Luck to stay on the field all day because your QB is trash and can't get a first down, you're going to lose.

Kind of illustrates why the idea that the QB must stretch the defense to be successful is B.S.
Indy had their way with the Titans' defense and the longest pass he threw all night only went 24yds past the LOS.

The completion locations isnt what Im trying to highlight, my bad using that chart.

What I wanted to point out was the time allowed to throw, hes hitting his 2nd and 3rd reads on a lot of those completions... We have to speed his clock up better

all the teams with good pash rushes beat the Colts. Eagles, Texans, Jags

I was talking about Gabbert.
gabbert sucks, no doubt.

but we didnt get pressure AT ALL all season, its not just this game.

derrick morgan had 0.5(!) sacks and i think orakpo had 1.5.... and they both retired.... edge is a huge issue. at least 1 opposite landry is needed, regardless of how the week 17 game went.

2 combined sacks from our starting 2 edge rushers is worse than terrible.....
