Did you watch the games? The pocket was constantly erratic.
Pockets are erratic. Brady always has DL every which way around him, he just maneuvers himself around the pocket to protect himself and kept his protection between them. Mariota is in a world of his own when he sees or feels pressure. They can't protect him if he won't stick it out in the pocket.

It’s not happening to Brady on every play. Brady trust his Oline and Mariota doesn’t have that comfort.

I feel like if we upgrade C and Conk comes back fully healthy and ready next year, we would be much improved. Good C and good Tackles can cover for average/below average Guard play. However, we should at LEAST upgrade Spain for a non-turnstile.

I think it is more of a combination of subpar oline performance and a QB who does not sense pressure well. A lot of sacks were on Mariota, because he holds on to the ball too long. At the same time I would say our receivers did not help him out much and I am not going to get started on the scheme in a lot of these games. A good OC should be able to draw up plays for the QB to get rid of the ball fast.

Here are the highlights (courtesy of TGO at TR):

“found that the Titans allowed the fewest QB hits in the NFL by an extremely wide margin. “

“When you combine sacks and hits the Titans quarterbacks were actually the 5th best protected group in the NFL.”

“The Titans QB hits total was comprised of 68.1% sacks, almost 10 percentage points higher than the next highest team.”

“After going back and re-watching all 47 of the Titans sacks allowed in 2018, I believe that the mystery of the high number of unassigned sacks AND the mystery of the low percentage of QB hits can be explained by the same factor: a tendency for Marcus Mariota to pull his eyes down and look to run when his first couple reads aren’t open.”
Last paragraph states what many thought and needs to be added into the consideration of why Mariota needs replaced. He holds the ball too long and maybe “unassigned sacks” should actually be assigned to the guy responsible for taking them, Mariota.

Didn't the numbers already come out that only like 6 sacks were Mariotas fault?

Didn't the numbers already come out that we get hit and sacked less than most teams because we pass literally half as much as some teams?

Imagine If we passed as many times as the Chiefs/Saints etc. Probably have 80-90 sacks and be starting Rusty Smith.

Mariota need to improve, he needs to grow, he needs better pocket awareness, but our interior o-line is bottom 5 in the league, and was ranked there the entire year until they started to play well in December.

People are so damn dramatic. Byron Bell was protecting Aaron Rodgers this year, FWIW. The guy who was dominated and embarrassed by our UDFA rookie in preseason. Mariota has nothing to complain about.

We had the 2nd fewest attempts in the league. You are correct. But Herndon says we had the fewest hits by a wide margin. So that's not so bad.

Go look at Mariota's scouting reports. He's always taken unnecessary sacks, and tried to run away because he "felt" pressure which wasn't there. He was hit a grand total of 0 times while making a throw this year (the only player with over 300 attempts to accomplish that feat) , and sacks make up a greater percentage of his QB hits than anyone else in the league, and it isn't even close. He SUCKS in the face of pressure.

Half of his sacks came in 3 games, when we were behind and he refused to throw the ball and took sack after sack. He took 2 a game otherwise. His protection wasn't as big of an issue as he was, and you really don't know anything if you think otherwise.

We once put Jonnu Smith 1 on 1 with JJ Watt...obviously that ended in a sack.

Another time they rushed 3 and easily blew threw our OL and got a sack.

MM8 needs to get it together but our protection was bad!

In this corner, people who like Mariota regardless of what happens in real life.

And in this corner, people who have eyes.

:slap:

16 more games of the pineapple farmer at QB. Can't wait for it to be over.

People judge the line's performance for the entire season based on a few plays. Any line will look bad if the QB holds onto the ball too long or makes an ill-advised attempt to escape the pocket. That's what makes rookies so susceptible to being blitzed to death, which is how defenses treated Mariota.

Just to make a point, how many times did you see Mariota throw the ball away instead of taking a sack ?

You can’t just use QB hits to evaluate this. Marcus has 331 attempts and Gabbert had 101.

Big Ben has 675 this year alone. That’s over 200 more dropbacks just this year. So of course the QB hits are going to appear to be “low” because we were such a run heavy team.

So we didn't attempt many passes, and didn't allow many hits. Sounds about right.

FWIW, Seattle had fewer pass attempts and far more QB hits allowed. No team with as few QB hits allowed as us were anywhere close to the number of sacks that we "allowed". Andrew luck was hit more times than our QBs, yet sacked 29 fewer times. How the hell do you explain that?

Exactly which QB looks good when getting continuous pressure up the middle of the line? Brady’s worst games are when a defense generates pressure through the middle. You can’t get every throw off in less than 1 second.

I’ve answered this question before from you but here we go again.

It’s because the pressure is coming from up the middle. That was the book on the Titans. Pressure up the middle and play contain with your edge rushers. Watch the games again. Blitzes up the middle and our paper soft interior o line. QB can’t leave the pocket because the edge rushers have the angle on him. So it’s get rid of it or get sacked.

We allowed so many sacks because pressure up the middle with edge rushers playing contain makes it very difficult to extend the play. When QB’s roll out of the pocket to the left or right it’s most of the time because the edge defender overpursed and it’s behind the QB. So all the QB hits turned into sacks because of this.

So, in summation, there really wasn’t anywhere for Marcus to go.

Does he hold onto the ball too long at times? Yes. Does he need to develop better pocket awareness? Yes. Does he need to be more consistent? Hell yes.

However that does not mean you get to try and say the O line wasn’t any part of the problem because it absolutely was.

A knock against him in college per scouts was that he did not have good pocket feel, he tried to bail too often, and took too many sacks. Did his line suck at Oregon as well? It is that just a fundamental weakness in his game which is being exploited in the NFL?

Sorry, but that sounds like an excuse. Teams contained Mariota in the pocket and bull rushed him up the middle because they know that he panics and won't get rid of the ball. Many of the sacks he took were after the 2.5 second mark, the league average for QBs to get rid of the ball. He absolutely cannot hold onto the ball or try to escape in those situations, yet he attempted to time after time.

Again, half of his sacks took place in 3 games, all of which involved us trailing the opponent and them blitzing Mariota at will. That's on the QB to get rid of the ball, not the OL to give him all day when defenses were bringing the house. And he was hit 0 times while attempting a pass. He constantly attempted to bail and gave up on plays, which is why he was sacked so many times.

You can't use that picture... the receivers were clearly all running the wrong routes. Mariota was looking where they were supposed to be and they were not there.
