just finished "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by some egghead named Jared Diamond

I liked the overall theory. Continental geography played a huge role in the advancement of technonlgy and therefore the shaping of modern geo-political climate.

But I disagreed with a ton of his extrapolitations.
 
I just finished TMNT Enemies Old, Enemies New and I am about to start the Watchmen graphic novels. I live like 2 minutes away from this kick ass comic book store that I just found....
 
I'm reading the Wheell of time series by Robert Jordan. I'm in Book ten of fourteen of this eleven thousand page series, and really want him to wrap it up.

Try Plagues and Peoples if you liked that one. It is much older but very well regarded. Also it is not political.

If you like that, you should read the long walk, which is the story of a guy who escaped from Siberia by walking to India. Also, Papillion is a classic. The escape from devils island.

Thanks, I should check out The Long Walk. The movie was not the best and I remember at the time thinking I should pick up the book as it should be a lot better.
 
I really need to get up off my ass and read this Watchmen graphic novel that has been sitting on my coffee table for a month.....
 
just finished Baseball and Cricket: The Creation of American Team Sports, 1838-72 by George B. Kirsch


More of a school book than a story. Full of footnotes and references. And sometimes the real meat is in those.

Anyhow the book takes you thru Americas adoption of playing/viewing team sports for recreation. In the early days of BB grown ups got together too play. Some of them faced down social resistance by forming clubs in the actual sense. They had the whole formal structure with elected officials and such. They typically charged membership fees and yearly assessments. Basically would be like a country club today. Anyhow these clubs had a focus on BB or Cricket. At some point the actual play on the field overwhelmed the club structure. Post civil war brought this too a boiling point. In 1871 the amatures, the country club types, split from the BB playing types (the professionals). As we all know the Professionals had a better sense of what Americans wanted, but hey the New York Knickerbockers and Brooklyn Excelsiors had more lavish dinners and balls than the Boston Beaneaters. lol

Good read if you are interested in sport history

If you like space opera this is the best hard SciFi space opera I have ever read. Much recommended.

NOTE - Allen Steele grew up in Nashville, lived numerous places, wrote Coyote while he lived in Yankeeland (Connecticut I think) and has spoken before congress concerning space exploration.
