I've been thinking this for a long time. There are so many holes to fill on this team, that by the time those holes are filled, other holes will emerge. It seems we will never have enough drafts/free agency players to become an elite team.

They expect players in year 1 or 2 just through their own ability.

I've started to wonder if this is the case, since we've had three straight top 10 picks at QB not work out. Either we're the worst drafting team ever or this team isn't able to develop players no matter how many coaching staffs they bring in.

You’re right. But we had a “king’s ransom” of picks to provide a solid foundation. That’s the foundation of our problem.

Completely agree, we had three, 2nd round picks and Henry is the only one we've gotten production out of. I don't think J-Rob gets nearly enough criticism for the Kevin Dodd and Austin Johnson picks, especially with who was left on the board.

Every draft pick could be elite... but I honestly believe none would continue as elite here due to no development.

This organization expects a player to be able to play out the gate.

Or the pick we gave up to move up and get Conklin. People say he’s not the same since the injury- but the injury can only be forgiven for the time he was away. He should be back to full speed. I think he had the benefit of running 3 TE sets his rookie year.

That’s because 1st round picks are EXPECTED (save QB’s) to contribute across the league.

Honestly, it was pretty obvious that Young, Locker, and Mariota weren’t going to cut it in the NFL. Those were desperation picks. Just chose the wrong years to need a “top QB”.
 
Not even Andrew Luck could have been successful here with this setup. He would have had the same outcome as Mariota. So freakin sad for Mary. He’ll probably go ball out for another team next year. Can’t wait to see
 
need to weasel out another first round pick for this year so we can get a qb and one of the bama WRs

I agree. But we’ve had a history of hiring within. We tried Whiz and that was a disaster. We’re trying again to go outside with Vrabel. I can’t argue with that approach. I still like Vrabel- I get what he’s going for w/ the aggressive play calls. Our BIGGEST problem right now is that we have a shell-shocked QB and we have a rookie dud OC with ZERO experience. And it shows.

Our GM was a first hire also. He’s learning. If we ditch- some other team gets the benefit of his average time on the job learning he’s had here. We’re just going to have to stay the course. We don’t have a championship memory to keep the fans believing during the hard times so the fan interest (and lack of) is very understandable albeit detrimental.
 
I really really really hope that Vrable comes out with a definitive answer at his press conference today as to who will start this week. If he is non-commital then it will only hurt the locker room. He needs to show leadership

Except for pretty much any defensive position, RBs, OL, and TEs, yeah you're right, we don't develop any players....


We've been a shit franchise for WR's for sure. Davis and Brown look like they can be really good, but they won't be anything here unless there is a massive change in philosophy.
