Ok I’m bored sat at an airport so thought I’d speculate on MM8s future...

From my point of view this is season is make or break for him. The extremes are easy - If he plays to a high standard he gets tagged / new deal and if he’s injured again or below par we move on.

However, what do we do if he is healthy and produces middling numbers and we go 9-7 again?

This season and previous few have shown on the whole that the teams that go deep into the play offs have elite QBs. I’d say it’s easier for our franchise if Mariota declares himself one way or another this year but can well imagine another ‘stuck in the middle’ campaign.

Thoughts?

We will go 9-7, Mary will miss 1-2 games, and we'll be asking these same questions next Winter.

Write that down kids.

I agree that’s the likeliest scenario. I posed the question as that’s more or less what I’m implying above. What do we do though when that inevitably happens?

If he doesn’t play like a real franchise QB (25-30 td’s) or misses any important games, let him walk and draft his replacement. It’s been 5 years, can’t wait for him to evelove into a franchise QB any longer. The 14 games, 11 td’s crap every year has got to go.

These mock drafts suggesting that we take a receiver in the first are killing me.

Brady has one good receiver, an old TE, and nothing else. As does Rodgers. And Brees. How is that any different than what we've got going into next season? Why does Mariota deserve more help than they do?

The injuries don't really weigh into it to me. I'm not one who bashes him for that.

I'm more concerned with the lack of production when healthy. That's what needs to change this year for me.

Im kind of on the opposite side with the injuries. 16 doses of Mary can win you the 10 games it takes to make the playoffs. Its those 2-3 times hes out that have killed us 2 of the last 3 years.

If we stick with Mary we can still improve even if he never does, we simply need a better backup.

Case Keenum could be the answer, no team is gonna commit to that guy as the starter and he knows it. OR we draft a QB in the top 3 rounds.

At the end of the day Im more worried about gabbert playing than Mary staying.

Injuries happen. I don't really buy that one guy is more injury prone than another.

The fact is, in order to keep Mariota past this year, we will have to pay him A LOT. If he is putting up too flight production, so be it.

If he isn't, I'd rather have a new cheap rookie than an overpaid mediocrity .

Yes cheap rookie wins out vs pricey scrub.

Sucks when you go into the season pining for a better starter and a better backup. Solution #1 make the starter the backup.
