In a move anticipated since Brad Childress was named head coach, the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday hired Tampa Bay secondary coach Mike Tomlin as the club's new defensive coordinator.
A five-year league veteran, Tomlin, whose name had come up with several coordinator positions in 2004, replaces Ted Cottrell, dismissed by Childress earlier this week. He is the first key addition to Childress' staff, and the Vikings' new coach is moving quickly to fill other spots.
