Did anyone else see Younghoe Koo, famous Youtube trickshot kicker, kick THREE perfect onside kicks for the Falcons today?! That was unbelievable. It makes me wonder if there could ever be a specialist on an NFL roster for such things? Like a long snapper, but specifically an onside kicker. I mean it sounds crazy, but that could turn the tide of games and be a HUGE advantage.

Falcons’ three onside kick recoveries even more impressive than you thought

Unbelievable that Atl pulled that off.
Curious if NO is also just bad at onside defense but I could see an onside specialist existing but I think we just witnessed something that won’t be repeated.
3 in a row over multiple games is almost unreal but 3 back to back to back has to be lucky too.

Onside kicking should just be a PART of a kickers game. I liken this to how you have some golfers who are great putters or great drivers but rarely both. I can’t ever see a team forefeiting a 53rd roster spot SOLELY for an onside kick specialist.

^^^
Yeah, that wouldn't make much sense to take up a roster spot for a little used part of the game.

I don’t understand why other kickers can’t copy the way he sets the ball up

Isn’t Koo their regular K now?
Don’t know what happened to Bryant but for the last few weeks Koo is the guy.

they do it for long snappers.

Beau baby!
Earning that paycheck year after year for about six snaps a game.

Edit: my mistake, it’s closer to 10snaps per game.

Just to note: current contract - 1.25 mil
He is also listed as LS and TE on profootballreference and has 1 career snap on offense (2012 in a 30-7 loss to Minnesota).

Edit edit: the more I look into brinkley’s history the more amazed I am by his ability to get a paycheck. He played at Missouri for 4 years, listed as TE, not 1 single catch.

I wonder what the analytics would say about a team with a good defense that has a good possibility to limiting the damage of a failed onside kick combined with at least one extra possession with good field position is worth per game.

have you ever long snapped? It’s more difficult than it seems and when you are consistently good add it, you’re gonna stick around.

it may only be 10 snaps a game, but think how important those snaps are.

Plus you have no element of surprise ever.
They had no element of surprise today but the modern rules of kickoff alignment mean the receiving team couldn’t do anything to prevent that. A perfectly placed bouncing ball between receiving team players has about a 50-50 chance, maybe more given that the kicking team players are running TOWARDS the bouncing ball and have better vision of it.

Like stated above, if you have a stout defense, the numbers have to be fairly comparable to going for it on 4th down near midfield which trailing teams do nearly every game.

long snap WAY more often in a game than occasional onside kick
Your telling me that they couldn't teach a player who does anything else how 2 snap it 15 yards? It took me like 4days 2 get it consistently when i was like 12.

Edit: changed 4hours 2 4days idk why i typed that.

I swear he has been on the team since 2000, it feels like i had been cuting him in madden 2 start every season as long as i can remember lol. I thought of getting a Jersey of his in highschool cause i thought it was so funny.

I will train my son from infancy to become a long snapper. Easiest money in football and a million dollar job you can keep for 15 years.

That is an awesome name

If part of the next CBA is to expand rosters (both active and gameday), I could see more specialists. But I'd think bringing in a guy who specializes in kickoffs which have higher hang time that land inside the 3-yard line would be more important than a guy who just does onside kicks.
