Every no and then I learn something new about the NFL’s history. I’ve watched a short documentary on the first World Football League and never did it mention how close Tennessee was to having a NFL team back in 76’ when the WFL collapsed.

The Memphis Southmen almost took one of the spots the Seahawks and Buccaneers ultimately took.
Now, because Southmen is a terribly stupid team name, everyone seemed to just agree on calling them Grizzlies.

Curious if any of you Tennessee natives knew anything about this or enjoyed the tea for the 2 years they (and the WFL 1st try) existed?

In the 90’s, Memphis made another run with the Memphis Hound Dogs but lost to Jax and Carolina.

Then of course Memphis finally got their wish in the Oilers for the 97’ season just to not care to the point they played 98’ at Vanderbilt until the Coliseum was completed.

Wait , Memphis Hound Dogs was nearly a
‘thing’?! o_O

good thing that didn’t come to fruition

Well, Memphis lost on the Hound Dogs and settled for 1 season in the CFL as the Mad Dogs.

I think the longest tenured one of these dog teams is actually your picture of the fictional Mud Dogs.

Showboats were great!

Reggie White & Lex Luger
Wow. I’m a pretty big wrestling fan and didn’t know Luger played.
Coincidently he played with Ron Simmons (Farrooq) on the TB Bandits.
